Oleh karena itu, alasan kami mengambil judul diatas karena untuk memberikan informasi kepada pembaca tentang transistor.

PEMBAHASAN

A.    PENGERTIAN

Transistor adalah alat semikonduktor yang dipakai sebagai penguat, sebagai sirkuit pemutus dan penyambung (switching), stabilisasi tegangan, modulasi sinyal atau sebagai fungsi lainnya. Transistor dapat berfungsi semacam kran listrik, dimana berdasarkan arus inputnya (BJT) atau tegangan inputnya (FET), memungkinkan pengaliran listrik yang sangat akurat dari sirkuit sumber listriknya.

Transistor through-hole (dibandingkan dengan pita ukur sentimeter)

Pada umumnya, transistor memiliki 3 terminal, yaitu Basis (B), Emitor (E) dan Kolektor (C). Tegangan yang di satu terminalnya misalnya Emitor dapat dipakai untuk mengatur arus dan tegangan yang lebih besar daripada arus input Basis, yaitu pada keluaran tegangan dan arus output Kolektor.

Transistor merupakan komponen yang sangat penting dalam dunia elektronik modern. Dalam rangkaian analog, transistor digunakan dalam amplifier (penguat). Rangkaian analog melingkupi pengeras suara, sumber listrik stabil (stabilisator) dan penguat sinyal radio. Dalam rangkaian-rangkaian digital, transistor digunakan sebagai saklar berkecepatan tinggi. Beberapa transistor juga dapat dirangkai sedemikian rupa sehingga berfungsi sebagai logic gate, memori dan fungsi rangkaian-rangkaian lainnya. 

 

2. SEJARAH

Transistor ditemukan oleh tiga fisikawan Amerika : William Shockley, John Bardeen dan Walter Brattain pada tahun 1948. Sebelum transistor ditemukan bukan berarti elektronika belum ada. Sebagai pendahulu transistor orang menggunakan tabung katup elektronik yang berukuran lebih besar dari pada transistor. Tabung elektronik pernah mencapai masa keemasan. Tabung elektronik diproduksi besar-besaran untuk digunakan pada radio dan televisi. Bahkan komputer (ENIAC,1948,di Amerika Serikat) sempat dibuat dengan tabung elektronik. Sekalipun mempunyai fungsi yang sama, akan tetapi cara kerja kedua benda tersebut berbeda. Pada tabung elektronik, elektron terpancar karena elektroda yang dipanaskan (katoda), kemudian elektron bergerak di ruang hampa ke elektroda lain (anoda). Diantara katoda dan anoda diselipkan elektroda lain bernama grid. Fungsi grid berguna untuk mengatur besarnya arus yang mengalir. Karena membutuhkan pemanasan itulah, maka tabung elektonik membutuhkan daya yang lebih besar. Dilain pihak, aliran pembawa muatan transistor mengalir melalui bahan semikonduktor (setengah penghantar) tanpa membutuhkan pemanasan sama sekali.

Transistor juga mempunyai 3 elektroda, bernama emitor (= katoda), kolektor (= anoda) dan basis (= grid). Tidak seperti tabung elektronik yang berukuran relatif besar, transistor dapat dibuat dalam ukuran yang amat kecil. Jutaan transistror pada prosesor komputer menempati luas beberapa Cm persegi. Tak mengherankan apabila komputer kuno yang bernama ENIAC yang terbuat dari tabung elektronik berukuran lebih besar dari rumah kita dan membutuhkan daya ribuan Watt. Berkat ukuran transistor yang kecil kita dapat memasukkan Hand-Phone ke dalam saku. Transistror-transistor ukuran kecil bersama komponen lainnya dirangkai jadi satu dalam sebuah IC (Integrated Circuits). Kita tidak dapat melihat transistornya karena IC tertutup dalam kemasan plastik. Peralatan elektronika kini kebanyakan menggunakan IC karena jauh lebih ekonomis. Kini penggunaan transistor lepasan (diskrit) jarang ditemui, kecuali untuk rangkaian sederhana.

Tabung elektronik berawal ketika Thomas Alva Edison (Amerika serikat) tahun 1883 menciptakan lampu pijar. Secara tidak sengaja ia menemukan bahwa elektron dapat terpancar pada filamen lampu pijar yang dipanaskan. Ini kemudian disebut emisi termionic atau efek Edison. Penemuan Edison dimanfaatkan oleh Fleming (Inggris) pada tahun 1902 untuk membuat dioda penyearah sebagai detektor radio. Dioda tabung elektronik Fleming berfungsi sebagai penyearah, yaitu dapat menghantar pada satu arah tetapi menyumbat pada arah sebaliknya. Elekton dapat mengalir dari katoda(panas) ke anoda (dingin). Tak lama berselang, tahun 1906 Lee De Forest(Amerika Serikat) menambahkan elektroda ke 3 yang bernama Grid, lahirlah tabung elektronik Trioda.

Dioda penyearah dapat pula dibuat dari bahan semikonduktor, hal tersebut telah lama diketahui. Usaha untuk membuat trioda semikonduktor telah dimulai tahun 1920an oleh banyak orang di berbagai negara. Akan tetapi baru berhasil pada tahun 1950an oleh 3 sekawan tadi. William Shockley, John Bardeen dan Walter Brattain menerima hadiah Nobel untuk bidang Fisika karena berhasil menemukan transistor. Perkembangan tabung elektronik dari Dioda menjadi Trioda berlangsung dalam waktu yang singkat. Akan tetapi perkembangan dari dioda semikonduktor menjadi trioda “transistor” semikonduktor memerlukan waktu yang lebih lama. Ini mungkin disebabkan teori semikonduktor pada saat itu masih gelap. Marilah sekarang kita membahas teori semikonduktor seterang mungkin.

3. CARA KERJA

Dari banyak tipe-tipe transistor modern, pada awalnya ada dua tipe dasar transistor, bipolar junction transistor (BJT atau transistor bipolar) dan field-effect transistor (FET), yang masing-masing bekerja secara berbeda.

Transistor bipolar dinamakan demikian karena kanal konduksi utamanya menggunakan dua polaritas pembawa muatan: elektron dan lubang, untuk membawa arus listrik. Dalam BJT, arus listrik utama harus melewati satu daerah/lapisan pembatas dinamakan depletion zone, dan ketebalan lapisan ini dapat diatur dengan kecepatan tinggi dengan tujuan untuk mengatur aliran arus utama tersebut.

FET (juga dinamakan transistor unipolar) hanya menggunakan satu jenis pembawa muatan (elektron atau hole, tergantung dari tipe FET). Dalam FET, arus listrik utama mengalir dalam satu kanal konduksi sempit dengan depletion zone di kedua sisinya (dibandingkan dengan transistor bipolar dimana daerah Basis memotong arah arus listrik utama). Dan ketebalan dari daerah perbatasan ini dapat diubah dengan perubahan tegangan yang diberikan, untuk mengubah ketebalan kanal konduksi tersebut.

Secara umum, transistor dapat dibeda-bedakan berdasarkan banyak kategori:

• Materi semikonduktor: Germanium, Silikon, Gallium Arsenide
• Kemasan fisik: Through Hole Metal, Through Hole Plastic, Surface Mount, IC, dan lain-lain
• Tipe: UJT, BJT, JFET, IGFET (MOSFET), IGBT, HBT, MISFET, VMOSFET, MESFET, HEMT, SCR serta pengembangan dari transistor yaitu IC (Integrated Circuit) dan lain-lain.
• Polaritas: NPN atau N-channel, PNP atau P-channel
• Maximum kapasitas daya: Low Power, Medium Power, High Power
• Maximum frekuensi kerja: Low, Medium, atau High Frequency, RF transistor, Microwave, dan lain-lain
• Aplikasi: Amplifier, Saklar, General Purpose, Audio, Tegangan Tinggi, dan lain-lain

v BJT

BJT (Bipolar Junction Transistor) adalah salah satu dari dua jenis transistor. Cara kerja BJT dapat dibayangkan sebagai dua diode yang terminal positif atau negatifnya berdempet, sehingga ada tiga terminal. Ketiga terminal tersebut adalah emiter (E), kolektor (C), dan basis (B).

Perubahan arus listrik dalam jumlah kecil pada terminal basis dapat menghasilkan perubahan arus listrik dalam jumlah besar pada terminal kolektor. Prinsip inilah yang mendasari penggunaan transistor sebagai penguat elektronik. Rasio antara arus pada koletor dengan arus pada basis biasanya dilambangkan dengan β atau . β biasanya berkisar sekitar 100 untuk transistor-transisor BJT.

v FET

FET dibagi menjadi dua keluarga: Junction FET (JFET) dan Insulated Gate FET (IGFET) atau juga dikenal sebagai Metal Oxide Silicon (atau Semiconductor) FET (MOSFET). Berbeda dengan IGFET, terminal gate dalam JFET membentuk sebuah diode dengan kanal (materi semikonduktor antara Source dan Drain). Secara fungsinya, ini membuat N-channel JFET menjadi sebuah versi solid-state dari tabung vakum, yang juga membentuk sebuah diode antara grid dan katode. Dan juga, keduanya (JFET dan tabung vakum) bekerja di "depletion mode", keduanya memiliki impedansi input tinggi, dan keduanya menghantarkan arus listrik dibawah kontrol tegangan input.

FET lebih jauh lagi dibagi menjadi tipe enhancement mode dan depletion mode. Mode menandakan polaritas dari tegangan gate dibandingkan dengan source saat FET menghantarkan listrik. Jika kita ambil N-channel FET sebagai contoh: dalam depletion mode, gate adalah negatif dibandingkan dengan source, sedangkan dalam enhancement mode, gate adalah positif. Untuk kedua mode, jika tegangan gate dibuat lebih positif, aliran arus di antara source dan drain akan meningkat. Untuk P-channel FET, polaritas-polaritas semua dibalik. Sebagian besar IGFET adalah tipe enhancement mode, dan hampir semua JFET adalah tipe depletion mode.

5. FUNGSI

Transistor hanyalah alat untuk mengatur arus listrik seperti saklar, ia dapat menghubung dan memutus aliran listrik. Jutaan transistor yang ada dalam komputer hanyalah bekerja sebagai pemutus dan penghubung arus listrik belaka. Ini cukup mengejutkan bagi kita mengingat komputer dapat melakukan pekerjaan yang amat rumit yang mana diwujudkan secara “sederhana” oleh transistor.

Selain sebagai saklar transistor digunakan juga sebagai penguat. Pada penerima radio sinyal listrik yang diterima antena radio sangat lemah. Transistor menguatkan sinyal tersebut sehingga kita dapat mendengar suara penyiar. Demikian pula sinyal listrik dari microphone yang digunakan penyanyi di atas panggung. Sinyal listrik yang dihasilkan microphone lemah, kemudian transistor memperkuat sinyal tersebut sehingga mampu mengerakkan speaker. Suara penyanyi itupun terdengar sangat keras oleh penonton.

Ringkasnya transistor mempunyai dua fungsi utama:

• Sebagai saklar (pada komputer)
• sebagai penguat ( pada penerima radio)

1. KESIMPULAN

Transistor adalah alat semikonduktor yang dipakai sebagai penguat, sebagai sirkuit pemutus dan penyambung (switching), stabilisasi tegangan, modulasi sinyal atau sebagai fungsi lainnya. Transistor dapat berfungsi semacam kran listrik, dimana berdasarkan arus inputnya (BJT) atau tegangan inputnya (FET), memungkinkan pengaliran listrik yang sangat akurat dari sirkuit sumber listriknya.

Transistor merupakan komponen yang sangat penting dalam dunia elektronik modern, karena dalam rangkaian analog transistor digunakan dalam amplifier (penguat). Rangkaian analog melingkupi pengeras suara, sumber listrik stabil (stabilisator) dan penguat sinyal radio.
